Bio
Matthew creates striking, often surreal imagery—with a particular focus on conceptual, beauty, fashion, portraits and fine art nudes. Seeking out the unique in the ordinary, Matthew is thoroughly absorbed in possibility. His meticulous eye for beauty, thoughtfulness of his subjects and innovative approach result in ethereal, indelible images that captivate viewers.
Influenced at an early age by the Chiaroscuro of the old master painters Matthew seeks to bring that use of light and shadow to his photography. Also as a child, pictures from stolen glances at his father’s Oui magazine became emblazoned in his mind. Recently, while flipping through Bob Carlos Clarke's long out of print Obsession in a used bookstore in upstate New York, Matthew was reunited with those images that have stayed with him all these years.
He cites other influences from Russian poetry to song titles and has pursued study under Barbara Nitke, Amy Stein and Phillip Toledano at ICP and SVA.
Matthew won the 2009 B&W Magazine Excellence Award and has had his work sold at auction at the New York Academy of Art’s Annual Take Home a Nude gala.
Born in Yonkers and spending the latter part of his childhood in Cold Spring, Matthew is currently based in New York City. He prefers film to digital, will eat the strangest thing on the menu and, in spite of his low-key demeanor, loves drum and bass music and skateboarding fast downhill.
