Lola was very young when I took this image. I was playing with lighting setups. Lola has a very distinctive heart-shaped face which is very three dimensional. Flat modern lighting tends to flatten out faces with distinctive planes. My lighting draws on the dramatic modelled lighting setups of the 1930s studio systems. I light around people to try and represent the sense in which we kinetically feel the appearance of another, not just from their physicality but the space that they inhabit, the air around them.
